American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is credited with coining the term “Manhattanhenge” to celebrate the phenomenon of a sunrise or sunset lining up with the each-west streets of New York City. This alignment also takes place in Toronto four times every year; two sunrises and two sunsets. Torontonians, borrowing a page from the New Yorkers, have dubbed these events Torontohenge.
This photograph (Torontohenge RS1A6) was taken from the east end of the Prince Edward Viaduct on Aug 21, 2021, illustrating the defining characteristics of this phenomenon, including the sun at low altitude above street level, a streak of red, orange or yellow light painted down the middle of the street and redsplendent flare.
